Boat safety - EPIRB

Police

Police received an old Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) activation last night. The EPIRB was located in a bin at Pinelands; they can be activated manually or by exposure to water.

Battery World has the contract for the correct disposal of the old 121.5 MHz EPIRBs to eliminate any unwanted search and rescue efforts being conducted.

From 1 February 2009, 121.5 MHz EPIRBs are no longer detected by the satellite system. It is only by chance that this frequency will be detected by aircraft and may never be heard.

Police urge the public to ensure they have changed from the old 121.5 MHz to the new 406 MHz EPIRB.

This is a timely reminder for the long weekend, to all fishing and boating enthusiasts to ensure they carry the correct safety gear on board. Advising family/friends of intended destinations and return times and keeping updated on weather forecasts are important when planning trips out on the water.
