Katherine Police have charged a 23-year-old male today in relation to an attempted sexual assault that occurred on a 21-year-old female on Wednesday.

It is alleged that the 21-year-old female was walking along a bicycle path South of Katherine along the Stuart Highway at around 5:50 pm when the incident happened.

The victim was listening to music through headphones when she was grabbed from behind and dragged into nearby bush land. She was able to escape and wave down a passing vehicle.

The 23-year-old offender was located a short time later and has been charged with:

Attempted sexual intercourse
Aggravated assault
Deprivation of liberty

He is remanded in custody and to appear in the Katherine Court on Tuesday 26 May.
