Assault police – Wadeye

Police

A 33-year-old man will appear in the Darwin Magistrate's Court today in relation to an incident that occurred yesterday at Wadeye where a male police officer was assaulted.

At about 4.00 pm police received information that a 30-year-old woman had sought refuge in the terminal building at the Port Keats airstrip as she was being chased by the 33-year-old man.

Members attended and observed the man trying to gain access to the building. As he approached police he allegedly threw a punch to one of the officers causing him to stagger back.

The officers managed to ground stabilize the man and he was arrested and conveyed to the clinic for medical treatment of a sore shoulder. Whilst at the clinic a group of about 30 family members gathered outside but there was no violence.

Once the man received treatment he was conveyed to the Police Station and later charged with engaging in conduct that contravenes a Domestic Violence Order and assaulting a member of the police force. He was remanded in custody and flown to Darwin to appear in court today.

The male police officer was also treated at the clinic for swelling, a cut to his forehead and a laceration on his lip. Another male police officer suffered grazes to his legs and arms in the incident but did not require treatment.
