A 24-year-old man has been arrested for an unlawful entry of a service station in Alice Springs overnight.

Police received a report of an unlawful entry at the Mobil Larapinta Service station just after 1am today.

The offender gained entry into the building and was attempting to open the ATM machine inside when he was disturbed by a passing security officer.

The security officer apprehended the man when he attempted to escape the premises.

Police arrived shortly after and arrested the man for unlawful entry and criminal damage.

No property was stolen from the premises but approximately $300 worth of damage was done to the building.
