Arrest for copper cable theft – Nightcliff

Police

Two teenagers were arrested after they were caught red-handed trying to steal a quantity of copper cable from a yard in Nightcliff overnight.

Police received a report of suspicious activity at the rear of Woolworths Supermarket in Nightcliff just before 3.30am. The caller told police a utility was parked nearby and it appeared two people were loading material into the tray of the vehicle.

Police arrived a short time later and arrested two 17-year-old males who were loading copper and aluminium cable from a storage yard into the utility. They were taken into custody and will be interviewed later today.

Acting Senior Sergeant Tony Deutrom said police would like to thank the member of the public for reporting the suspicious activity.

"The apprehension of the offenders was due entirely to the timely and accurate information supplied to us, and we would like to commend the member of the public for having the good sense to phone police as soon as their suspicions were aroused," Acting Senior Sergeant Deutrom said.

"This led directly to police arresting the offenders red-handed."
