Arrest for assault -Yuendumu

A 26-year-old man will face court after he allegedly assaulted his wife while she was holding her newborn baby at Yuendumu yesterday.

The victim told police her husband had become angry with her and punched her to the head and threw her on the ground while she was holding her baby. He then allegedly grabbed her by the hair and shook her before arming himself with a piece of timber and threatened her with it.

Police arrived and as they were in the process of arresting the man he allegedly assaulted three of them.

He allegedly kicked one police officer in the jaw, punched another to the face and then kicked him in the back of the head and punched a third to the face.

The man was taken into custody and has been charged with numerous offences including:

Aggravated assault
Three counts of assaulting Police
Going armed in public,
Breach of DVO
Resist police
Threatening behaviour in public.

He has been remanded in custody to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on May 28.
