A 30-year-old man is in police custody in relation to an alleged armed robbery that occurred in Katherine last night.
At about 7.30 last night Katherine Police received a report of a male on the Victoria Highway allegedly armed with a knife acting in an agitated manner and heading in the direction of the United Service Station on Katherine Terrace.
General Duties' members responded quickly and located the male still armed with the knife and loading property into a bag within the premises.
It was ascertained that the male had entered the premises armed with a knife, jumped the counter and forced open the cash register and removed a quantity of cash. He also allegedly stole some cigarettes and other items from the shop.
No-one was injured during the incident and all the stolen property was recovered but some damage was caused to the cash register during the incident.
Police are attempting to identify a number of witnesses known to be in close proximity to the business premises, and urge them to come forward or call Katherine Police on 89738 000.
The 30-year-old man is expected to be charged by Katherine Detectives later today.
