To be considered for the position of a Firefighter you need to successfully complete all 5 stages of the application process – which are:
1. Online Application
Applications must be made via jobs.nt.gov.au during a recruitment campaign. It is very important that you read and understand the specific requirements for this recruitment process you are applying for.
If application is incomplete, e.g. required documentation not attached, your application will not be considered further.

2. Beep Test
Upon successful completion of stage 1, applicants will be invited to complete the Beep Test (a shuttle run, cardiovascular test). A level of 9.6 must be obtained to progress to the next stage of recruitment.

3. Cognitive and Psychometric assessment
Psychometric Assessment provides an objective and standardised approach to assessing and comparing applicants’ abilities, strengths, and preferred working styles while Cognitive ability is important because it influences how quickly somebody can learn, how readily they can adapt, how easily they can understand, and how adeptly they can solve novel problems.

4. Physical Aptitude Test (PAT)
The NTFRS has designed a physical assessment for all applicants to undertake. The assessments consist of both fitness and simulated on-the-job tasks and is therefore considered a valid indicator of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete physically demanding tasks as required by operational Firefighters at emergency incidents. If an applicant is unable to complete a task in the allocated time, they may, with the permission of the instructor, continue on with the whole challenge test. The applicant will be notified during testing of this outcome and will be confirmed in notification by mail.
This will allow the applicant to experience the whole challenge test should they apply again.

5. Formal interview
The interview process involves candidates facing a panel of three or four members and answering structured questions to determine their knowledge, values, skills and experience.
The interview can take up to an hour.
