Here are some of some our most asked questions to give you an insight into becoming a firefighter in the NT.

How do I apply?

When applications are open, apply through the NTPFES website which will redirect you to the NT Government jobs board.

Is there a limit to how many times I can apply?

You are only permitted to submit one application in each recruitment campaign. However, if you have been unsuccessful in previous campaigns you may apply again.

I have applied previously. Do I have to apply again?

Yes, each application is a separate selection process. If you are unsuccessful, you will have the opportunity to reapply.

Can any of the recruitment tests be undertaken interstate?

The written assessment will be conducted Online through an external agency so can be completed anywhere in Australia. The Physical Aptitude Test (PAT) will only be conducted in Darwin and Alice Springs and face to face interviews are conducted in Darwin and Alice Springs with possibility of interstate applicants being interviewed using Skype.

Are there age limits?

No. However, there is a restriction in relation to gaining a Medium Rigid Licence. In the Northern Territory you must have held a Class C or Light Rigid licence for at least one year.

Can I apply if I have a criminal record?

The NTFRS are aware that people make mistakes and all criminal history matters are assessed and are considered on a case-by-case basis. Some serious offences may mean applications will not be progressed.

I am from overseas, can I apply?

To be employed as a permanent employee of the Northern Territory Government you need to be either an Australian citizen or have permanent residence status. Once you have either of these you are eligible to apply.

New Zealand citizens with a Special Category visa allowing them to remain and work in Australia indefinitely can apply.

Do I need Medium Rigid (MR) Licence to apply?

No, the licence is not required at the time of submitting the initial application. However, it is important to note that if your application is successful you will need to have your Medium Rigid Licence (with the ability to drive a manual vehicle) at least 1 week prior to the course start date. If you do not have your MR Licence at that time your position will be forfeited and offered to another applicant.

Evidence will be required at interview to show that applicants have started the process of obtaining their Manual Rigid Licence.

Do I need to have my First Aid Certificate?

Yes, your certificate will need to be presented to the Recruitment Officer prior to the physical testing stage. During the recruit course the Northern Territory Fire & Rescue Service (NTFRS) will provide extra emergency care training as part of our recruit course in order for participants to become familiar with NTFRS procedures and equipment.

How long until I find out if my application has been approved?

The selection process is demanding and it may be a number of weeks before the result of your application is known. The following is a guide only and may vary slightly without notice.

How long is the recruitment process?

Approximately 6 months.
