Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free and confidential counselling service for people connected to the Northern Territory Police Force (NTPF) and the Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services (NTFES).

The NTPF/NTFES EAP provides short-term professional support for personal or work-related concerns and can be accessed at different points in life and work, depending on what support is helpful at the time.

Find an EAP provider

National Providers  Top End Providers  Central Australia Providers

Providers are grouped by region to help you find support close to you. You are not limited by location and can choose any provider, regardless of where you live. If you’re unsure where to start or have questions about the EAP, Wellbeing Services can help.

About the EAP

Who the EAP is for

The EAP may be available to:

  • Current NTPF employees
  • Current NTFES employees and volunteers
  • NTPF Cadets
  • Northern Territory Police Legacy legatees
  • Immediate family members of eligible workers
  • Former NTPF or NTFES employees for up to 12 months after separation

This is a dedicated EAP for NTPF and NTFES. It is separate from the Northern Territory Government whole-of-government EAP.

If you are unsure whether you are eligible, Wellbeing Services can help.

What the EAP offers

The EAP offers confidential, short-term counselling with qualified, independent professionals.

This generally includes:

  • Up to six (6) counselling sessions per issue, per financial year
  • Support for a wide range of personal or work-related concerns
  • A choice of approved providers across the Northern Territory and nationally
  • Appointments available face-to-face, by phone or via telehealth

The EAP is intended to support early intervention and decision-making about next steps. It is not designed to replace long-term or ongoing treatment.

How the EAP works

Most people access the EAP by self-referring for counselling with an approved provider.

If further or different support is recommended, this will be discussed with you. Where needed, Wellbeing Services can help coordinate next steps with your involvement.

You do not need approval to begin EAP counselling. Some types of support require referral or review. If that applies, it will be explained to you before anything proceeds.

The EAP operates separately from other Northern Territory Government EAP arrangements.

Getting started

You do not need a referral to use the EAP. If you are eligible, you can contact any approved EAP provider listed on this page.

You may choose a provider based on location, areas of experience, or whether you prefer face-to-face, phone or telehealth appointments.

When you contact a provider, let them know you would like to access support through the NTPF / NTFES Employee Assistance Program.

Before your first appointment, you will be asked to complete an informed consent form. This explains confidentiality and how your information is managed.

If a provider does not feel like the right fit, you can choose another approved EAP provider or contact Wellbeing Services for support.

Confidentiality

Your privacy is respected throughout the EAP.

Counselling sessions are confidential between you and your EAP provider. Wellbeing Services does not receive information about what you discuss unless you choose to provide consent.

To manage the EAP, Wellbeing Services uses a client ID number. If you self-refer and have not used the EAP before, the provider will contact Wellbeing Services to confirm eligibility and obtain your client ID. The client ID is used for administrative purposes only, such as appointments, invoicing and any requests the provider makes on your behalf.

When providers communicate with Wellbeing Services, they use the client ID rather than personal details. No counselling content is shared with Wellbeing Services or your workplace unless you have provided informed consent.

All EAP providers and Wellbeing Services staff work under professional, ethical and legal confidentiality obligations. Your provider will explain confidentiality and informed consent at the start of your session. You can also contact Wellbeing Services if you would like more information.
