Northern Territory Police have charged a man after a domestic violence incident that occurred in Darwin’s rural area over the weekend.

Around 1am on Sunday, police received reports that a 34-year-old man was assaulting his 68-year-old male relative at a residence in Lambells Lagoon.  Initial reports further indicated that the 34-year-old was attempting to gain access to secured firearms at the residence.

Police from general duties, Dog Operations Unit, Strike Force Trident and the Territory Response Group promptly responded and arrested the 34-year-old who was unarmed.

A quantity of unsecured ammunition was also located.

The 34-year-old has since been charged with Aggravated assault, Threats of injury or cause detriment and Fail to meet storage requirements.  He was bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court at a later date.

Senior Sergeant Siiri Tennosaar said “The actions of the male relative and professionalism of the police call taker has potentially averted a serious incident from escalating further.  The prompt actions of all attending police should also be commended”.
