Recruit Squad 1-2015 have begun fund-raising efforts for the Starlight Foundation with Firies4Kids, hoping to make a difference for sick or injured children in the Northern Territory.
The recruit squad are half-way through their training to become Northern Territory Fire Rescue Service Officers. Station Officer David Lines from the Training and Development Command said every recruit squad is required to put together a community support project.
“We believe this is an important part of the training to be a Firefighter, interacting with the public in a positive manner instils a sense of community pride and more importantly, gets them to do something good for no expected return. This is something career and volunteer Firefighters do on a daily basis.”
Recruit Firefighter Gary Pavkovich said the squad adopted the Starlight Foundation as their charity of choice because they offer a fantastic range of services to assist sick children get well.
“With our motto ‘Firies4Kids’ the Starlight Foundation combines what we do with our fundraising efforts so it was a good match.
“We liked the idea behind the foundation as well, even health professionals agree that lifting the spirits of a seriously sick child is just as important as treating the illness.
“We will kick off our fundraising at the Mindil Beach Markets on Thursday 9 July. We will be shaking tins and have a Starlight Stall there to collect donations.
“We will also have a fire truck down there as well to maximise our exposure, what kid doesn’t like a fire truck?
“We hope the public will be generous and help us help a very good cause.”
Recruit Firefighter Pavkovich said they also had a website set up to accept direct donations.
Station Officer Lines said the recruit squad can look forward to a sense of accomplishment when they see what they have achieved.
“I would like the entire PFES community to get behind this and see how much money Recruit Squad 1-2015 can raise.
“It always feels good to help someone in need,” he said.
