The NAB Cup in Alice Springs saw the Geelong Cats take on the Melbourne Demons and despite losing to the Cats, it didn’t dampen their spirits as they made their way around the Central Desert region, visiting schools and conducting AFL skills clinics.

Melbourne Demons players Dom Barry and Sam Blease headed to Nyirripi on Police Airwing with Community Engagement Police Officers (CEPO) Senior Constable First Class Jenny Hamilton and Constable First Class Shane Blanchard on Saturday 1 March for ‘Return to Communities’ footy clinic. Police Airwing was welcomed at the airstrip by the school bus full of kids, Remote Sergeant Ian Plowright and Constable Ashlee Trevaskis, the crew headed straight to the footy field to get started.

After some bargaining by R/Sgt Plowright, the Demons brought with them a signed jersey and extra footballs to be used as incentive to help get the kids to school.

“Everyone involved had a brilliant afternoon, so much so that the community lined up along the fence to the airstrip and wouldn’t let the players leave until they got a few more photos,” R/Sgt Plowright.

“This sort of partnership between NT Police and AFLNT is a great way of engaging and supporting the community; the excitement and involvement from the community members in town was great to see and be a part of,” Constable 1/C Blanchard.
