We’ve known for decades that our volunteers are the best around and now it’s known to everyone else too as NTES and NTFRS volunteers cleaned up at the 2013 Northern Territory Volunteer of the Year Awards.
We claim that our volunteers are “ordinary people doing extraordinary things” but when you consider that more than 50 years of volunteering for Emergency Services has been contributed from the nominees of these awards alone, there’s nothing ordinary about it!
The Northern Territory Volunteer of the Year Awards celebrate, recognise and reward the invaluable contribution volunteers make to the community.
This year seven of our volunteers were acknowledged as well as a nomination in the small organisation award category for the Alice Springs Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Palmerston Volunteer Unit volunteer, Garry Casey took out the Chief Ministers Award for Emergency Service following 18 years of service coordinating emergency response, unit training, maintenance of unit equipment, the continual recruitment of members and social events.
“In this category the finalists were Phillip Ingram from the Darwin Volunteer Unit (NTES), Andrew McGuiness, Jeffrey Seib from the Darwin Volunteer Unit and Damien Shaw – Volunteer Captain from Humpty Doo Volunteer Fire Brigade. So I was up against three other guys I know well and work with in the volunteering world who are all very deserving of this award.
I’m just very proud and humbled to be recognised for something I love doing! It’s a win/win,” he said.
Unfortunately, Garry had to hand his award back due to a grammatical error but on the night he did receive celebrity status and was almost blinded by the camera flash lights.
Trevor Sieb from the Darwin Volunteer Unit was also a finalist for Volunteering Service while Bryan Harris (Watarrka), Andrew Mann (Hart’s Range) and Keven Stount (Tennant Creek) were all acknowledged as Most Valuable Volunteers in Central Australia.
A massive THANKS to all the awesome NTES & NTFRS volunteers who give up their time, your dedication and efforts are truly appreciated.
Take some time to thank a volunteer today!
