Maningrida Emergency Response Group has been building and extending our current equipment shed and HQ, thanks to a grant and some very generous donations from Toll Marine Logistics, Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) and Stedman Constructions.

We knocked down our old equipment shed which looked like the next cyclone could have taken it away. BAC gave us a shipping container that we are fixing up, work is still in progress and completion of the whole project is still a long way off but we will get there eventually.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the businesses that helped and also to MERG members that are volunteering their time to complete this project.

Recently Maningrida community was lucky enough to have Circus OZ visit. It’s the first time in the history of Maningrida that we have had a circus so you can imagine the excitement for the children here. MERGS were asked to provide a stall so refreshments and food could be brought at the event. We ran a fund raiser BBQ and raised nearly $2000.00 which will cover rego and insurance on our brand new fire truck which is coming soon. STAY TUNED!!! The night was a success as you can see and many volunteers helped to achieve this goal.

Up and coming events for MERGS include Maningrida Festival and the yearly Maningrida Fishing Competition. We also hope to finish HQ and storage areas in the next couple of months to better our facilities, training and coordination of emergencies.

We are currently training in Small Boat Handlers Course and Road Crash Rescue, and have completed our Induction Course for the year. We also hope to complete our first aid soon enough.

Challenges as ever out bush are membership recruitment and keeping members in such a transient community, but we are continually working on it.
