Wednesday 29-May-2019 14:50

Northern Territory Police Dog Operations Unit conducted screening of passengers and luggage arriving on a commercial flight in Alyangula this morning.

During this screening, a 36-year-old female resident of Groote Eylandt was identified by a police drug detection dog, ‘Lena’. The female was arrested and searched at the Alyangula Police Station.

Approximately one kilogram of cannabis was located heavily wrapped in four packages which the female had strapped to her body.

The female has been charged with possession of a commercial quantity of cannabis.

Officer in Charge of the Dog Operations Unit, Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Dunlop said, “With Cannabis currently fetching $150 for less than a gram in Angurugu this seizure could have had a street value of $150,000.00”

“Residents and contractors travelling on commercial and private flights into Groote Eylandt can be assured that NT Police drug detection dogs preform regular screening of passengers and luggage.”
