Northern Territory Police are reminding people about the importance of securing their property after an unlocked vehicle with its keys in the ignition was allegedly stolen.

The vehicle was reported stolen from a car park in Alice Springs on Thursday this week and was apprehended on the Ross Highway in the early hours of this morning with the use of tyre deflation devices.

The vehicle’s five occupants fled on foot, with two youths aged 14 and 16 apprehended nearby.

Assistant Commissioner of Regional Operations and Road Policing Narelle Beer said crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

“Take the simple steps of locking your doors, removing your valuables from your vehicle and being alert,” she said.

“This vehicle was left unattended with keys in the ignition. We don’t want to make it easier for thieves.”

Police are urging anyone with information relating to the theft and the remaining three vehicle occupants to contact them on 131 444 or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. You can choose to remain anonymous.
