Seven arrested after months of property crime - Groote Eylandt

Thursday 03-May-2018 09:42

Groote Eylandt police, with the assistance of police officers attending from Darwin, have arrested four youths and three adults this week in a series of operations devised to tackle unusually high numbers of property offences in Alyangula Township.

The youths, aged between 15 and 17 years, were arrested for up to 12 separate events of property crime offending that allegedly took place between January and April this year.

“While police are focussed on positive engagement and diversion of youths away from crime, all instances of criminal behaviour are investigated and offenders brought to account,” Senior Sergeant Tanya Woodcock from Groote Eylandt Police said.

“Reducing harm in our communities and townships is our top priority.”

Before the arrests, one of the four was on bail for seven prior property offending events, while also serving a suspended sentence. He has been remanded to appear in Darwin Children’s Court.

A second youth was bailed with strict supervision conditions, with two summonsed to appear in Alyangula Court.

Three adults were also arrested for outstanding warrants and breaches of bail conditions in relation to property and violence offences. Two were later bailed, with the third remanded in custody. All three will appear in Alyangula Court at a later date.
