Monday 03-Dec-2018 15:34

A number of people in Kalkarindji have been arrested in relation to the alleged assault of police officers on the weekend, with further arrests expected.

Kalkarindji members reported responding to unrest in the community on Saturday evening, observing a number of highly intoxicated males behaving in a disorderly manner. It is also alleged that some fighting had commenced between the males.

A 20-year-old male who was demonstrating aggressive behaviour was taken into protective custody for his safety. During this apprehension, the officers were approached by an aggressive and intoxicated group of offenders, many armed with sticks, rocks and metal poles.

A police vehicle was damaged by a number of the males, with damage including a smashed windscreen and multiple dents to panels.

The officers were able to withdraw from the scene without injury.

Commander of Central Command Michael Hebb said the behaviour of the persons involved is totally unacceptable.

“Our police officers should not be confronted with such violence when doing their job to protect the community,” he said.

“I would also like to acknowledge the support provided by many community members who assisted police both during and after the incident.”

Five males have been charged with a variety of offences including:

  • Assault police
  • Going armed in public
  • Hinder police
  • Damage property
  • Engage in violent conduct
