Fatal Crash – Nhulunbuy

The Northern Territory road toll has risen to 43 following a two-vehicle crash near Nhulunbuy overnight.

Senior Sergeant John Worrall said the vehicles were involved in a head-on collision at about 8:00pm on the Central Arnhem Highway 100km from Nhulunbuy. Police, Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance officers from Nhulunbuy were called to the scene.

“One vehicle had four occupants; a female occupant has been confirmed deceased. The second vehicle had one occupant. All received injuries and were transported to Nhulunbuy Hospital.

“Two people were subsequently airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital by CareFlight.

“Members from the Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating and enquiries are continuing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.”

Central Arnhem Highway will remain closed to heavy vehicles this morning while the scene is under investigation. Light vehicle are able to pass, under the direction of officers on site.

“Motorists are asked to delay travel if possible, and to obey all traffic instructions by officers at the scene.”

The Northern Territory road toll for the same time last year stood at 37.
