Auslan Community Messages
AUSLAN Community Messages are designed to increase public awareness of emergency management and resilience building strategies within the Northern Territory through use of online video education. This project has specifically targeted an audience not yet captured within the Northern Territory.
Currently NTES delivers emergency management messages orally and visually through Community Service Announcements (CSAs) on television and radio and in writing through brochures. Messaging is also conveyed through the NTES website. However it has been recognised by the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network that the deaf community benefits from messaging through signing.
Multiple communication channels and formats should be available for use by individuals and organisations involved in disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. Australian Federal Government has identified the significance of Total Conversation and has specified a policy direction within the National Disability Strategy 2010-2020 for communication and information systems that are accessible, reliable and responsive to the needs of people with disability, their families and carers.
During times of Emergencies – smaller 15 second messages will be broadcast on Television referring the public to the www.emergency.nt.gov.au website to watch the full messages.
